It's better to do just one thing perfect than a lot but so-so

There's something in The place beyond the pines that makes feel the spectator just fine when they leave the theatre. Nobody can say that it's a bad movie, but, of course it isn't an amazing movie who you'll remember in the future.

It's obvios that it's not a casting failure. Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper and the rest of the cast are correct. They don't do the interpretation of their lifes but at least sometime you can feel what their characters are passing through.

We can say the same of the direction work. The action scenes are well filmed, they don't over dramatized the drama parts most of the times, Derek Cianfrance don't use too much the music to get the spectator involved in the story in an easy way.

The story it isn't original, that's true, not complex, not too easy, but nothing new and kind of lost. That's the weakest point. You can say that The place beyond the pines tells the story of two families. One about focus on the Ryan Gosling character, even when he seems disappeared in the middle of the film. He is a motorbike showman who trips around the states with his show when suddenly he discovered that he's father. Then he decide to change his life. Even when the mother has her own life, he doesn't give up and try to give them all that they need even if he must steal. The other family goes around the police who Bradley Cooper played and who caught Ryan Gosling. Both families are connected for their whole lives even when try to avoid each other and their past.

Well, the thing is that the story starts with a reminiscence of Drive but with less personality, jump to a drama close to the most famous movie of Cianfrance, Blue Valentine, then turns to a meaningless case of police corruption as Training day, goes forward to the future and try to say something about drugs problems in important and poor normal families like Steven Soderbergh's Traffic and comes back to the drama that we can see in some telefilms. This is basically the weakest point of The place beyond the pines. The director never know which tone he have to use, he seems as he wants to speak about so many subjects in so many ways that finally he gets lost with his own story. There's no personality, there's no tone, there's confusion about what's the real theme of the movie...

I want a remark that it isn't really a bad movie, it's well directed, talks about interesting subjects, it has a good message, but that's confusion, mixture, fusion of good ideas going nowhere stays with you when you walk through the door of the theatre. As our mother used to say
it's better to do just one thing perfect than a lot but so-so.
