'La vie' in chapters and in a (great) movie

There's nothing special in La vie d'Adèle. Chapiters 1 & 2's plot but a movie is not a book. It's more than a story, it's moving images and how these images can speak on their own, how a camera movement has a meaning as Godard and the theoretics said.
Abdellatif Kechiche knows it. La vie d'Adèle could be a lesbian story as it could also be straight or gay, but it's not. More than a love story it is a piece of life. Not in vain the title said it's just 2 chapters of one life. In that case, Adèle's life.

Adèle (Adèle Exarchopoulos) is a teenager, lost like everyone at her age. Sex, boys, confusion, an unclear future,... We can see it in her face and in the way she sleeps, and thanks to the work of the director. From the first moment we can see how she eats, dreams and feels because the camera is close to her, it doesn't let her breathe. When she's with her family, her friends, or at parties. She feels that way and so do the viewers.
This feeling
builds up when suddenly she sees a girl with blue hair crossing the street. The audience can imagine why but the director doesn't explain it at all. Then she has an erotic dream with her. She's confused or she doesn't want to accept the facts. But finally she does, not without problems at school or with her friends (another story that the director doesn’t explain in these three hours). Then, nothing new under the sun of a love story but everything.

The camera starts to give her (and the audience) some distance, more air when she starts her relationship with Emma (
Léa Seydoux). Not in the sex scenes when the viewers can feel their passion, their excitement, their feelings. No sheets, no censor,... nothing... and everything again.
As I said at the beginning,
La vie d'Adèle is a piece of life, and sex is a part of it and it's clear unlike other movies. As the author of the book said, it's not what makes the movie different or better. It has more.
Abdellatif Kechiche knows the possibilities of the cinema. He plays with the ellipsis, jump on time, show us how Adèle's life is when she finishes school and goes to live Emma who has a different life style. He jumps later in the movie to show how Adèle lives for Emma and how she has her life until the end of thesetwo chapters”.

Is La vie d'Adèle something revolutionary? No. But is cinema. Good cinema that is not always available for everyone in the theatres.
Apart from those interesting and unexplained things, the director wants the audience involved. He gives us clues to think about it, some songs, the movie played at the background during a party, the silence, the food, the distance. The viewers are part of the movie for all of it and can enjoy 3 hours of great cinema, seated and silent and pleased when they leave.

Movies are more than a story, more than minutes of footage is part of people life's, as La vie d'Adèle, and that what's make it bigger, good and important.
